Johnston Canyon Sept 6, 2011
We left Lake Louise and headed back toward Banff. We took the Bow Valley Parkway. We stopped at Johnston Canyon. At Johnston Canyon you can walk along a paved path with the cool depths of the canyon to obtain close views of the effects of flowing water. Johnston Creek is eroding the canyon into a fault system in the predominantly limestone bedrock. Seven waterfalls mark the locations of resistant dolomite rock. The 49 foot high Lower Falls are about three quarters of a mile from the trailhead. The Upper Falls was another mile up the trail.... I was still very tired out from the climb to Lake Agnes so we did not climb to the Upper Falls.
As we headed back into Banff and our Tunnel Mountain Camping Ground we encountered the elk by the roadside having dinner. He did not seem to care that we were driving by.
When we got back to the campground it was almost like our own private place. It had been so busy on the Labour Day Weekend and now it was mostly empty!!!!
Well, tomorrow is another day and our plan is to head up the Icefields Highway to Jasper.
Until then,
