Tillamook, Oregon Monday 8/27/2007

Hi, Today we travelled to Tellamook, OR. We stopped at the huge cheese factory there and watched how they make cheese. We did not buy any cheese but we did taste the ice-cream that they make... good.

From there we went to the Naval Air Museum that is just south of town. During WWII they built 2 wooden hangers at Tillamook. These hangers were built in 1942 and housed 8 blimps each that were used to patrol the coastline. These hangers were built from woof from around the area because the all the metal at that time was being used for aircraft and tanks. Watching the video of these structures being built was very interesting. There is only one hanger left as after the war there was no longer a reason for the hangers and they were used as logging mills for a while and then when logging was no longer needed one of the hangers was used for hay storage. One night in1992 it caught on fire and went up in flames. The firefighters could not save the building on fire so they put all their efforts into saving the remaining hanger. Since 1994 the remaining hanger has been used as a museum for one of the finest collections of privatey owned WWII flying aircraft in the nation. I can't get over how huge this place us and to see the wooden structure is incredible!

We drove back down to Newport enjoying the beautiful day, although is was a bit windy today. We have been very lucky with the weather, one day is prettier than the last!

Not sure what we have planned for tomorrow, maybe we will take the day off and just rest. The car is making a strange noise so we are going to have that looked at, I hope it is nothing serious.... stay tuned.....

Until later.... Love Candy and Johnny
